Application deadline for all workshops is APRIL 11, 2008

The Knight Digital Media Center Multimedia Training Program is accepting applications for 20 fellowships per workshop for journalists to attend these seminars that combine practical instruction in multimedia reporting with in-depth exploration of issues in online publishing.

We are accepting concurrent applications for workshops being offered in May, June and July 2008. Applicants may apply to one, two or all three workshops. Because we receive far more applications than we can accommodate, applicants are encouraged to apply for multiple workshops to increase their chances of being accepted into one of them.

Participants will receive six days of intense hands-on instruction on
how to do multimedia stories for the Web, including:

•       Using digital video cameras, photo cameras and audio recorders;
•       Doing storyboards, stand-ups, voiceovers and other broadcast techniques;
•       Digital video, audio and photo editing; creating photo slide shows in Flash;
• Web page creation and multimedia Web site design.

Fellows create a multimedia project as part of the seminar. In addition, there are evening and noontime presentations by online publishing experts on the most pressing issues in digital media.

WHO SHOULD APPLY: Professional print and broadcast journalists seeking multimedia skills. Fellowships include lodging, meals and instruction. Cost of travel to the workshop must be paid by the applicant’s news organization.

HOW TO APPLY: An online application form and instructions are available at: http://multimedia.journalism.berkeley.edu/training/

If you have questions about the workshop, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions page on the application site, which addresses the most commonly asked questions about the application and selection process. All photographers must have another entity (such as a nonprofit, NGO, or community-based organization) that will work with the photographer to design an innovative distribution strategy that engages a specific audience, community, and/or site and presents documentary photographs in a way that has a meaningful and lasting impact on the communities or issues addressed in the images. Grants of $5,000 to $30,000 will be awarded.

Circle of Blue: Reign of Sand
A look at how the traditional nomadic culture of Inner Mongolia is changing as the grasslands turn to sand. Caused by many of the same environmental and policy-based conditions as the American Dust Bowl in the 1930’s, this transition is having major effects on the people and land in Northern China.

“The Life Project is a lyrical interpretation of life on Earth from its earliest beginnings to its present diversity.
It includes a large-format book, a multimedia orchestral performance, a traveling photographic exhibition, and a dedicated educational website, www.LifeThroughTime.com. “

A documentary on the Evangel Hospital in Nigeria, where some of the thousands of women who suffer vesicovaginal fistuals go to “find physical healing, practical training, friendship and hope for a second chance in life.”

The Crossing by the Rocky Mountain News
“On the morning of Dec. 14, 1961, a speeding passenger train cut through a school bus in the farm country outside Greeley, killing 20 children. It was the worst traffic accident in Colorado history.

Today, the oldest of the 16 children who survived is 61 and preparing for retirement. Reporter Kevin Vaughan and photographer Chris Schneider have traveled the country to pull together the story of how a few seconds that changed everything still reverberate through the lives of the survivors and the families of those who died.”

The Crossing is a 33-part series exploring the long-term consequences and reverberations of that day in 1961.

You might have seen this when it came out in 2006, but if not, it’s worth going back and watching. An in-depth four part look at the vanishing wetlands in Florida, and the problems encountered while trying to save them.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is home to the deadliest war in the world today. An estimated 5.4 million people have died since 1998, the largest death toll since the Second World War, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

After successive waves of fighting and ten years of war, there are no hospitals, few roads and limited NGO and UN presence because it is too dangerous to work in many of these regions. The West’s desire for minerals and gems has contributed to a fundamental breakdown in the social structure. See the story.
